Haramaya University Convenes 43rd Annual Research and Community Engagement Review Workshop<\/h1>\n

Haramaya University has officially opened its 43rd Annual Research and Community Engagement Review Workshop, issuing a strong call for enhanced research, eco-friendly innovation, and ecosystem conservation to foster sustainable community resilience.<\/p>\n

\"Dr.
\nSpeaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Yishak Yousuf, Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, emphasized that the annual event serves as a critical platform to evaluate the university\u2019s academic and outreach initiatives while gathering constructive feedback for future growth.<\/p>\n

\"Haramaya
\nGuided by the theme, “Eco-friendly Innovation and Ecosystem Conservation for Building Community Resilience,” the university underscored its commitment to aligning higher education and scientific research with the practical needs of society. Dr. Yishak noted that because local communities are increasingly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks, building long-term resilience has become a paramount institutional priority.<\/p>\n

\"43rd
\nAs one of Ethiopia\u2019s eight designated research universities, Haramaya University operates across six distinct thematic areas. Reporting on the current year’s achievements, Dr. Yishak disclosed that the institution managed 116 ongoing projects, completed 42 projects, pursued 37 interdisciplinary research initiatives, and supported 94 postgraduate student research works.<\/p>\n

\"Haramaya
\nTo maintain international academic standards, the university also established a dedicated Research Ethics Review Panel this year. This commitment to quality has yielded significant results: Haramaya University secured 1.1 billion Birr in external funding, generated approximately 400 Scopus-indexed journal publications, and produced 12 policy briefs, two patents, and two software copyrights.<\/p>\n

\nThe Vice President also highlighted the university’s extensive outreach impact across agriculture, natural resource management, health, education, law, and infrastructure. In the agricultural sector, the university successfully disseminated over 95 technologies and partnered with the Ethiopian Seed Enterprise to support and strengthen national seed system development. Public health initiatives also saw massive scaling, with Haramaya University\u2019s specialized hospital serving over 200,000 patients annually. Furthermore, the Hararghe Health and Demographic Surveillance System now monitors 60,000 households and more than 320,000 individuals, anchoring major projects in foodborne disease surveillance, child health, and climate-related health interventions.<\/p>\n

\nBeyond health and science, the university expanded its legal aid and social welfare programs to create a direct socioeconomic impact. The institution’s legal services supported more than 150,000 vulnerable women and children, providing legal aid valued at over 97 million Birr. Simultaneously, grass-roots educational and community welfare initiatives over the past year included the implementation of the Bate kindergarten school project, the distribution of over 800 chairs to five local schools, and the construction of residential homes for elderly community members.<\/p>\n

\nConcluding his address, Dr. Yishak urged workshop participants to critically evaluate existing gaps and propose strategic directions for future institutional plans.<\/p>\n

The workshop brought together senior government officials, university leadership, researchers, and invited stakeholders from various sectors.<\/p>\n
