College Of Business And Economics



The College of Business and Economics (formerly Faculty of Business and Economics) was established at the Haramaya University in the year 2002 in response to the government’s program of expanding and diversifying university education. The objective of establishing the College is to produce well-trained manpower in the area of Business and Economics that could contribute towards the development of the country. Initially, the college has started Bachelor of Arts degree programs in Accounting and Management. After a year, three other first degree programs have been initiated which are Cooperatives, Economics and Computer Science. In 2009, the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology was separated from the College and become under College of Computing and Informatics. In 2010 the college started training students in Public administration and Development Management (PADM).

The College is striving to become a centre of excellence in the fields of business and economics nationally and internationally in producing qualified graduate.

As part of the accomplishment of its mission, the college has been offering courses under summer degree programs in the field of Accounting, Management and Cooperatives. In addition to this, the college is also offering Bachelor of Art degree (BA) programs in continuing and distance education programs in various fields including Management, Accounting, Economics and Public Administration. Currently, the college is offering five undergraduate programs, namely Accounting, Cooperatives, Economics, Management, and Public Administration and Development.

In addition, the College is working very hard towards the improvement of the quality of education in all the programs that are being run under its jurisdiction and to which it gives logistic supports (i.e. program under the College of Continuing and Distance Education). At the same time, efforts are being made to further expand the education services in terms of opening graduate programs in various departments of the college. Moreover, the college is planning to launch two postgraduate programs: Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Energy Economics.


The vision of the College of Business and Economics of the Haramaya University is to become a centre of excellence in academics, in the fields of Business, Economics, Cooperatives and Public Administration and Development Management, research and community services.


The mission statements of the College of Business and Economics are:

  • To train qualified manpower in the area of Business and Economics, Cooperatives and Public Administration and Development Management that could contribute to the development efforts of the country.
  • Initiate and conduct demand driven researches in the aforementioned areas of studies.
  • To provide need based and reliable consultancy and short-term training services to the society.
