Committee lauds activities of Haramaya University
Capacity Building Standing Committee of the House of Peoples’ Representatives lauded the ongoing efforts of Haramaya University to enhance the capacity of farmers side by side with discharging its responsibilities in the learning teaching process and conducting researches.
Committee representative, Wasihun Beyecha said the university has been exerting encouraging efforts to introduce improved technologies to local farmers .
The university has been undertaking commendable activities to build capacities of instructors. It has also been designing curriculums and preparing textbooks, he said.
Activities aimed at distributing improved technologies to farmers should further be strengthened in collaboration with local and foreign agriculture research centers.
The efforts of the university to open libraries near to dormitories of female students helps to empower the students and enable them actively participate in development activities
The committee urged the university on the occasion to strengthen poultry, fishery, and other similar activities aimed generating additional income.
University President, Professor Belay Kassa on his part said the university has been training over 25,000 students in 90 fields of study.
The university has continued designing curriculum with a view to launching programs that will contribute share in the efforts to speed up development.

University allocates 440, 000 Birr for research projects in
the Young Faculties Researchers
The stated amount of money was allocated for 22 young faculty
researchers from the faculties of Veterinary Sciences, Health
Sciences, Law, Technology, Education and Business and Economics.
It is believed that the fund would allow young faculty researchers
to carry out useful research activities that can foster their
academic and professional developments.

Head: Female Enrollments in Postgraduate has increased at Haramaya
University
The university is increasing the number of female students in
its graduate classes. The available data shows that 16% of about
575 graduate students attending graduate classes are females.
This is a remarkable improvement when compared to the previous
2% enrollment of female students. The University is working
with government and non-government organizations to increase
this number further. The University has already secured about
147, 00 USD aid from Development Innovative Fund to support
the education and accommodation of about 25 female students.

Haramaya University has recently been
running over 124 research projects
These researches are being carried out in the main campus and
in and around eight research sites. The research projects include
animal rearing, crop development, promoting post-harvest production
technologies, agronomy and other projects that can contribute
towards increasing the food security of the country.

University approved 163 research projects
The
university approved about 163 research projects on its 24th
Annual research and Popularization Workshop. The projects include
research activities on sorghum, maize, peanut, potato, wheat,
cereals, root crops, vegetables and fruits. It also incorporates
studies on camel, goat and diary productions. It is expected
that the studies would be finalized after a period of one year.
Important representatives and stakeholders from the regional
states of Oromia, Somalia, Harari, Dire Dawa and other important
offices participated in the conference and shared their own
experiences.

University Publishes a Reputable Scientific and Multidisciplinary
Journal
The Haramaya University published a scientific and multidisciplinary
international journal for the first time. With its title East
African Journal of Sciences, the journal publishes original
scientific papers and disseminates scientific and technological
information to the users in Eastern Africa and elsewhere in
the world; the Journal also enhances exchange of ideas among
scientists engaged in research and development activities; and
accepts papers from anywhere else in the world.. The first publication
of the journal incorporated over 9 different research studies.
The journal meets most of the international standards in its
editorial composition and publication requirements. It is believed
that the journal stimulates the university academic staff and
other professionals in and outside Ethiopia to publish
