Department Background

The Civil Engineering Department of Haramaya University, under Technology faculty, is located at Dire Dawa town, around 38 kilometers from the main campus. It was established as one of the two departments of the Technology faculty in 1997.

Mission

  • To train high level qualified personnel by providing the highest quality education based on international academic standards and helping them install professional ethics and societal commitments.
  • To shape them as competent professionals fulfilling the national and global requirements.

Objectives of the department

  • To produce qualified, responsible civil and water resource engineers who can participate in the study, design and construction of civil engineering infrastructures.
  • To provide short-term trainings for organizations that involve in the construction of different infrastructures.
  • To provide consultancy service for governmental and non-governmental organizations, which includes, testing of materials for construction.
  • To organize workshops, seminars; to update the skills of civil engineers and to solve the problems in the construction industry.

Admission requirements to Undergraduate Program

Admission at freshman level to all undergraduate full-time studies is processed and granted by the Office of the Registrar.
Admission at freshman level to the undergraduate degree program of HU will be granted by the University to a candidate who fulfills one of the following requirements:

a. Admission Following Preparatory Education

Applicants who have successfully completed their ten-plus-two (10+2) preparatory school education and who pass the University Entrance Examination

b. Foreign Examinations

Students with the following foreign examinations results:
General Certificate of Education; Cambridge Overseas Examination; West African School Certificate; the Oxford Examination, and other examinations of equivalent standard can sit for the University Entrance Examination.

Graduation Requirements:

1. Total Credit Hour of 148/146.
2. No “F” grade in any of the courses.
3. Final Semester CGPA =2.00

1. Overview


Faculty of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering is found in Dire Dawa which is around 38 km away from the main campus. Dire Dawa, town in eastern Ethiopia, located in Harar Province on the Dachatu River. Located on the railway half-way between Addis Ababa and the port of Djibouti on the Red Sea, Dire Dawa is of great commercial importance to the country. It has plants producing cement, textiles, processed food, coffee, and animal hides. This town has a population of 164,851 (1994).

2. Mission:

  • To teach the fundamentals of Modern Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • To conduct and foster creative research by addressing the needs of industry, government and the scientific community.
  • To graduate well-balanced students with up-to-date technical knowledge, and high aspirations to excellence, poverty alleviation and leadership.
  • To publicize our achievements through enduring publications and via conference participations.

4. Objectives

  • The department of Electrical Engineering offers programs leading to B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in the regular program with duration of 4 years and continuing program with duration of 5 years.
  • The department enrolls students in the regular as well the continuing program, which reveals the fact that the department offers students not only the excellence in cutting-edge technological knowledge and applications, but also in a multidisciplinary engineering background for the career that our students have planned.
  • The department also has plans to motivate the students to participate in community based extracurricular activities, and to help them contribute in societal problem solving.

An individual who shall join the department needs to complete 10 + 2 preparatory program from natural science stream. The program needs good stand of Mathematical background.

6. Graduation Requirements

  • Total Credit Hour of 152/148.
  • No “F” grade in any of the courses.
  • Final Semester CGPA = 2.00.

7. Degree Nomenclature

Upon successful completion of the program within four years “Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering “will be awarded.
