DEPARTMENT
OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
[
Introduction
In many parts of the world, simple survival and the prevention
of disease and poisoning are still serious concerns. Maintenance
of an environment suited to man’s efficient performance
and the preservation of comfort and enjoyment of living are
the goals for the future. These levels of life and progress
can be the basis for action programs in environmental health.
The field of environmental health encompasses several public
health intervention programs of paramount importance centered
at the control of physical, chemical, biological, socioeconomic
ergonomic and/or mechanical agents of diseases that affect human
health and welfare. It is a recognized fact that the quality
of life is directly related to the quality of the environment.
This is so because the quality of life or positive health depends
on the safety and good quality of the life support systems-clean
air, uncontaminated water and food, hygienic living and work
environment. In Ethiopia , poor environmental health conditions
have been and still are one of the important contributing factors
for the prevailing poor health status of the large majority
of the population in the country. Therefore, to meet the national
need, Haramaya University has started training of Environmental
Health professionals since 1995.
Vision of the department:
To be center of excellence in training Environmental Health
Professionals in Ethiopia .
Mission:
To train Environmental Health Officer who is capable of developing
and executing appropriate low cost environmental health technologies
for communities there by handling problems arising from poor
environmental health condition.
