Background

Based on the Proclamation issued on Negarit Gazeta of 18th August 1994 and Proclamation number 198/1994 the Haramaya University is given the mandate to open faculties and train students for the country’s development. With the premises of this mandate the University has therefore established the Faculty of Health Sciences in 1996 in the Main Campus. Establishment of the Faculty was pursuant to meeting the National Health Policy and long term plan of the government. The Faculty was relocated to Harar in Oct 2003 for ease of access to health care institutions for fostering the practical training of the students. The Faculty basing its main campus in Harar operates in three regions and one Administration Council located 50-100 km radius for training its students. Currently the Faculty has four academic departments, namely the Department of Public Health, the Department of Nursing, the Department of Environmental Health Science and the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology. Until 2004 the Faculty used to train students at degree and diploma levels. With the changes made in the new Higher Education Policy of the Government; the diploma programs (Nursing, Environmental Health Science and Medical Laboratory Technology) have phased out and are replaced by degree programs. The Faculty now runs B.Sc degree programs in the fields of Public Health, Nursing, Environmental Health Science and Medical Laboratory Sciences. The opening of the Faculty in September 1996 was, therefore, crucial and timely to complement the health sector strategy of increasing the number of mid-level health personnel and bringing about an appropriate mix of skill and ultimately satisfy the skilled health manpower need of the country.
