ground and Justification
In
trying to address the problems present in the education system,
the Ethiopian Government has called for a complete teacher Education
System Overhaul (TESO). In the context of future Teacher Education
System in Ethiopia, the desired paradigm shift involves:
Teaching
which makes changes in ideas and directly in peoples’
lives;
Taking the real world into the classroom and taking teachers
out into the real world ;
Democratizing
Teacher Education System in giving Teachers’, Students’
and Citizens’ confidence to make decisions, take initiative
and ultimately take control of their world.
The
role of the Teacher Education Institutions / Faculties/ has
been defined as a crucially important one. The expectation is,
therefore, within TEIs/FOEs that the paradigm shift must begin.
The present proposals for the overhaul of the education system
offer a direct challenge to TEIs/FOEs: to redefine their role
accordingly and to become active agents for change with in the
classroom, with in their communities and ultimately, with in
Ethiopian society.
This
means that graduate teachers will not only be adequately prepared
to contribute to the development of the society, but also to
be competent: in producing responsible citizens; in the subject
or the content of teaching; in the classroom; in areas relating
to the school and the education system; in the values, attributes,
ethics and abilities essential to professionalism in upholding
the professional ethics.
In
working towards implementing the vision, the sub committees
have focused mainly on: the Practicum (Teaching Experience);
linking the school, TEI/FOE and Local community; professional
courses and research; academic area- the combination of content
and method; assessment; organization of courses; certification;
gender; life skills; and civics and ethical education.
The
tasks for the Faculties of Education include reviewing, re-writing
and looking for the means and ways towards the implementation
of the pre-service teaching curricula for the Secondary School
Teachers’ Education Programmes run by the various Departments
in the FOEs of the present six Universities in Ethiopia based
on the curriculum developed by Ministry of Education.
Heads
of the Chemistry Departments in all FOEs have gathered at the
work shop organized by the MOE, April 2004, in order to standardize
the curriculum as required by the TESO’s Frame Work and
guide lines. Even though, there is a big gap between the TESO's
frame work and the Department heads, the Chemistry group has
been thorough in its work and tried its level best to maintain
the standard and the competency required by the future graduates.
In so doing the selection of Major, Minor, Professional, Practicum,
and supportive courses has been carefully done in accordance
with the training objectives, the Mission Statement and the
major assumptions made by TESO
Mission of the Department

-
be academically and professionally qualified and able to teach
effectively in Chemistry and Mathematics(major and minor respectively)offered
in the Secondary Schools and prepare students for Middle Level
Technical, Vocational or Higher Education.

students’ interest in learning and enable them to work
independently and co-operatively so that they can acquire
knowledge, skills of planning, analysis, organization, research

they need to take up their responsibilities as adults within
their communities.
