The College of Natural and Computational Sciences, in collaboration with the Vice-President for Community Engagement and Enterprises Development, has conducted short term training for Junior, Secondary and Preparatory School Science teachers working at 7 local Community Junior, secondary and preparatory schools during February, 01-05, 2016 at Main Campus.

According to the Dean of College of Natural and Computational Sciences of Haramaya University , Dr. Getachew Abebe, the aim of the training was to give practical work, which is designed to ensure the practical skills of the teachers in teaching their subject through staging demonstration and  experiments. Besides it also aimed  to build the confidence of teachers to use the experiment in all aspects of their work and deliver quality training to meet the changing and growing needs of the School Science Laboratory.

Dr. Getachew added that in the recent, the College of Natural and Computational Sciences has diversified its community related services from merely rendering course based teaching to summer in-service program students.

In this regard, the college has initiated various training programs targeting, the improvement of quality in the overall education of Science and Mathematics. Among their service, includes the provision of laboratory training to high school science teachers. The college endowed a potential among the trainees to replicate the manifestation of scientific principles that they coach in their schools.

In the training, a total of 44 Biology, Physics and Chemistry teachers were participated in the five days training and received certificate of participation. The participants were drawn from Bate junior School, Bate Secondary School, HU Secondary and Preparatory Model School, Haramaya Secondary and Preparatory School, Aweday Secondary and Preparatory School, Adele Secondary and Preparatory School, Kerssa Secondary and Preparatory School . This training was part of the outreach program which linked the University with the community, particularly in the education sector.

In the closing and certificate handling ceremony, in the presence of Vice President of Academic Affair, Professor Nigussie Dechassa, Vice-President for Community Engagement and Enterprises Development, Professor Kebede W/Tsadik, The Dean, College of natural and Computational Sciences, Dr. Getachew Abebe, trainers, trainees, respective Schools Directors and facilitators met and discussed at length and way forwarded on training s and improvements to be made in future and opportunities ahead of us. In the discussion, Professor Kebede W/Tsadik also stated that the training would strength and improves the candidate’s teaching practical skills in the area of their professions.

At the end, all the trainers and trainees received their Certificate of Participation handled By Professor Nigussie Dechassa and Professor Kebede W/Tsadik respectively.
