Graduate
Profile and Competence
The
development, growth and improvement of living standards in Ethiopia
are predicated on efficient, equitable and sustainable use of
its endowment of renewable and non-renewable resources. The
economy will remain heavily or largely rural for the nearest
decades. It will continue to depend heavily on agriculture,
in particular smallholder based production, as well as agro-industry,
for generating income, employment and export earnings. Subject
to competing demands, its fragile resource base must be managed
carefully, and equitably.
Responding
to this challenge, the BSc in Agricultural Economics program
will equip students, not only with the requisite concepts, knowledge
and tools in economics, but also the ability to adapt them to
the realities of their institutional, political and economic
setting. Such capacities are especially appropriate for the
Country, which has assigned very high priority to human development,
poverty reduction, and food security.
The
program will provide students with as solid foundation in economic
concepts and methods for various purposes including applied
analysis as professionals within government, business and not
for profit agencies; further advanced study for those seeking
a career in teaching and research; and lifelong learning and
retooling. A key attribute will be creativity in tackling problems
as functioning professionals and researchers through an acquired
capacity to adapt concepts and instruments to the issue at hand.

Development Objective
The
development objective of the RDAE program is to facilitate pro-poor,
gender sensitive and ecologically sound agricultural and rural
development by producing educated human resource in Rural Development
and Agricultural Extension at B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels. More specifically,
the program will assist in professionalizing and improving the
effectiveness and efficiency of interventions for agricultural
and rural development in Ethiopia by supplying the country with
creative, dynamic and professional change agents who upon their
graduation can serve various organizations addressing the emerging
issues in rural development in an effective manner. It will
in turn help to improve the life of the masses in rural areas
of the country whose problems are much intertwined with cultural,
socio-economic, institutional and situational issues.
Academic Objective
The
academic objective of this curriculum is to strengthen the academic
activities by encompassing the realistic issues of the country
such as poverty, natural resource degradation, and inequalities.
Such a curriculum modification with addition of more rural development
related courses will certainly make the graduates more capable
to meet the challenges in the rural sector of Ethiopia. It will
also match the human resource requirements of several stakeholder
organizations at national and international levels.
Graduates’
Profile
The
B.Sc. program in Rural Development and Agricultural Extension
is designed to produce competent and dynamic change agents or
communication workers who upon their graduation are able to
facilitate rural innovation (technological and institutional
innovations) process through network building, social learning
and negotiation using effective communicative intervention.
Upon graduation they can serve various organizations addressing
the emerging issues in rural development in an effective manner.
The graduates will have multiple roles: serve as adult educators/trainers,
