Call for Abstract for International Workshop on Camel Dairy Technologies
The School of Animal and Range Sciences through Haramaya Camel Dairy Project has plan to conduct International Workshop on Camel Dairy Technologies from July 7-8, 2016
Workshop background
Camels are popular domestic animals in arid and semiarid regions of Africa and the Middle East. About 70-80% of world camel population is owned by East African pastoralist and agro-pastoralist. Being an East African country, Ethiopia had 4.5 million camel population and rank the second in the world. Of those, 92% of them are found in Somalia and Afar region of Ethiopia. Camels are mainly kept as dairy animals, but also used for meat production and for transportation. Camel milk is mainly consumed raw in the local area without the use of modern processing and distribution channels. Camel milk is one of the staple daily foods for pastoralist, agro-pastoralist and most communities residing at the nearby areas. Processing of camel milk into different dairy product and extending the shelf-life of those products has been perceived to be difficult and impossible as a result of the inherent compositional difference in comparison to other dairy animals. Hence, the development of camel dairy industry was in sluggish pace of emergence. However, trough the use of modern biotechnological findings and technological unit operations there are progresses in processing camel milk into different dairy products such as production of fermented camel milk, cheese, extending the shelf-life of the milk and milk products has gone further steps. Therefore, sharing those fundamental findings, experiences and practical knowledge’s will have immense contribution to further develop new camel dairy products and to enable the camel producers to be competent in the dairy industry. It will also create awareness among the stakeholders for the future development of camel dairy industry.
The objective of this workshop is to share experiences and major achievements in camel dairy technologiesand to suggest the ways forward for the future development of the sector. The mode of the workshop will be public lectures by invited international scientist, presentation of different research findings on camel dairy technology related areas, panel discussion of senior scientists with expertises and entrepreneurs in the sector and exhibitions of some of the dairy products from camel milk. In this workshop a platform of contact between expertise, entrepreneurs, pastoralist and peoples working in the area will be created. Hence, the workshop will provide an opportunity for sharing and exchanging information and experiences in developing feasible camel dairy technologies.
