Historical Background

The school is established in 2008/2009 academic year under Institute of Technology to train and produce professionals with strong practical background in the fields of Agricultural Engineering, Soil and Water Engineering, and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering.

The School of Natural Resources and Environmental Engineering focuses on interactions between human activities and the natural environment. As pressures on limited natural resources grow, there will be increasing demand for engineers who understand how to make best use of these resources in the products and services they design. In line with this, School of Natural Resources and Environmental Engineering, Institute of Technology Haramaya University, launched to solve Engineering problems related to soil, water use, water conservation, water quality, soil conservation, irrigation/drainage, water management, agricultural mechanization and agricultural machine design of practical importance to the country and the world.

Profile of Agricultural and biological engineering Department (ABEN)

Rural Technology Department (RTD) which was the core of the current Agricultural engineering department established in 1960 Ec. producing BSc graduates. After revising its curriculum in 2007 the department was renamed as Agricultural and biological engineering.

Initially, the four years degree program aimed to produce high-level skilled manpower that directly takes part in the management, design and production of Farm Implements, Irrigation and Drainage, Soil and Water Conservation, and Post Harvest and Processing Technologies and was working to meet the then objectives till the new education policy. In line with the new educational policy of the country, the B.Sc. program in Agricultural and biological engineering was revised to be offered in five years. While redesigning the curriculum, modifications and amendments were made based on the need assessment.

Currently, the department has 181 students attending the five year regular program. So far the department graduated about 32 students with a four year Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural and biological engineering. The objective of the Agricultural and biological engineering Undergraduate Program is to provide broad-based educational training in Agricultural and biological  engineering and its applications leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree. Its goal is to enable graduates to meet the challenges of the engineering profession in a rapidly changing environment that exists in a developing country like Ethiopia. These  challenges require the ability to apply existing knowledge in new ways thereby creating new systems and opportunities as well as adapting existing technology to local production conditions. These requires the ability to manage service, maintain and improve upon existing systems Recently, due to Engineering overhaul in the country, redesigning the curricula  according to the existing labour market and international standards make it necessary to modify it in to modular base approach with a training span of 5 Years including half-year internship in industries.
Agricultural and biological engineering is then the art and science of the application of engineering to the field of agriculture.

Agricultural and biological engineering embraces
• Study of mechanical power sources, engineering of tools, implements and machines, machination and processing; robotics, systems and control engineering.
• Study of natural resource conservation, management and sustainable utilization and information technology application in agriculture.
• Study of civil structures in the farm, soils, irrigation, hydraulic and hydraulic structures.

The major task of Agricultural and biological engineering discipline is to apply technological and engineering tools that help to increase the agricultural production and efficiency, improve product quality, while preserving the quality of the environment. The main intention is to practice appropriate technologies in agriculture under conditions of scarce resources, develop and export new varieties of agricultural products, agriculture-related industrial products and systems, and advanced know-how.

Resources

Space requirement has steadily grown as the floor in use now is shared with other Departments. This indicates that there is an acute shortage of lecture rooms. Currently the department uses laboratory and workshops of local sister institutions. A plan to improve space requirement, establish computer laboratory, purchase Books, laboratory and workshop facilities and recruit staff.

Agricultural and Biological Engineering
The Agricultural and Biological Engineering programme is one of the undergraduate degree programmes given in the School under Institute of Technology of Haramaya University. Soil and Water Engineering
The Soil and Water Engineering programme is one of the undergraduate degree programmes given in the School under Institute of Technology of Haramaya University. The general objective of the program is to produce qualified manpower in the area of Soil and Water Engineering who actively involve in planning, designing and implementation of Soil and Water Engineering projects
Water Resource and Environmental Engineering
The Water Resources and Environmental Engineering programme is one of the undergraduate degree programmes given in the School under Institute of Technology of Haramaya University. The aim of the program is to cater the needs of engineers trained to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain engineering works for the control and utilization of water resources of the country.

 About the Department
The Water Resources and Environmental Engineering program is one of the undergraduate BSc degree program given in the Haramaya University, Institute of Technology, school of Natural Resource and Environmental Engineering.

 Academic Program

The Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (WREE) profession is a five years program, which trained the student at a regular programs . Till 2012 it has been graduated only once time, and at the end of the academic calendar of 2012/13, a total of 72 students the program will be graduated.

In summary Water Resources and Environmental Engineering involves:

  • Groundwater and Seepage, well design, seepage control.
  • Surface Runoff Analysis.

  • Extreme events: floods, mud flows, debris flows.

3. Research/ Journal
the major researchable areas involved in water resource and environmental engineering programs involves:

  • In reconnaissance, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies of water resource development projects; this may include technical studies, economic analysis, environmental impact studies and other relevant investigation.
  • Planning and design of dams and related appurtenant structures, canals, and other similar structures.
  • Involve in surface and ground water resources assessment and development for rural and urban water supply.
  • Planning, design, and construction supervision of irrigation projects for transporting and distributing water to agricultural lands furthermore, conducting research on problems of soil drainage and conservation.
  • Identification of flood prone areas and design of remedial measures for flood protection and mitigation.
  • In assessing and solving the problems related to the climatic changes.
