Master of Science in Physics

 

 

Introduction

Master of Science (M.Sc) in physics is a post graduate degree program designed in a way so that the students admitted to the program, acquire an in- depth knowledge in diverse areas of physics at the most fundamental as well as at the advanced level. After the completion of the course, the students are expected to gain enough competence and proficiency in physics, which would enable them to pursue research in physics, to take up teaching jobs for high- level physics, and to get useful employment in any private or government institutions where knowledge of physics is an essential requirement.

Objectives

The program has the following key objectives:

  1. To provide facilities and environment for students to learn and acquire knowledge in diverse fields of physics at the advanced level
  2. To produce qualified professionals in physics, capable of teaching at higher level, pursuing research in front- line areas of physics, applying physics- related skills that might be useful in other identical jobs in private as well as government institutions.
  3. To contribute towards upgrading the quality of higher education in physics in the country, by providing skilled and qualified M.Sc graduates

Graduate Profile

The students, who successfully complete the M.Sc course in Physics, are expected to have the following career prospects:

  • Having acquired a high degree of mathematical and conceptual skills, and a sound knowledge of the frontiers of Physics, the students will prove to be very efficient and versatile in teaching physics at any level, whether in a college or a university.
  • They can pursue research in both theoretical and experimental physics in any national or international institutes of higher learning, thereby contributing in the advancement of Physics.
  • There are many government and private organizations that require personnel with good knowledge of physics. The students can seek useful employment in such organizations.
  • Having developed the skill and power of analytical and mathematical thinking, they would be assets to any government or private jobs which require an ability to track problems and find solutions to them.

Admission Requirements

  • Candidates should be a graduate with BEd or BSc degree in physics or other related sciences
  • Candidates must qualify in the written entrance examination administered by the department
  • Candidates must meet the criteria set by the School of Graduate studies (SGS) in addition to the written entrance examination administered by the department
  • Candidates must be capable of presenting a letter of sponsorship from their organization or should be able to present an equivalent amount of financial source for the whole study period of the program
  • Candidates should be able to provide three letters of recommendation
  • Candidates preferably be with a working experience (Optional)

Duration of Study

Duration of the study is 2 years in the regular program and 4 consecutive summers for the summer program. In justifiable cases, it can be extended by one semester or one summer with the approval of graduate counsels at the department and college level.

Graduation Requirements

Minimum number of required course work to accomplish (get) the degree:

  • 26crhrs course work & 6crhrs thesis for thesis option
  • 35crhrs course work & 3crhrs graduate project for non-thesis option

Course performance of CGPA greater than or equal to 3.00 with no more than one ‘C’ for both options and pass grade in the thesis (for thesis option) and a minimum of ‘B’ in graduate project (non-thesis option).
