Master of Science in Biology

Introduction

Education is pillar for development and alleviation of poverty and it offers opportunity to the literate to come to the forefront to play a leading role in sustaining the development of the country. In accordance with the growth of a country’s industries as well as research institutions, educational needs change from time to time. Currently, in Ethiopia, industries, research, health and educational institutions are steadily growing.

This has created ample opportunities for biologists to play a role in the country’s development. Their contribution will, however, greatly depend on the quality of education they receive in universities. The recent need assessment and feasibility study made by the department in this regard clearly indicated the presence of a deep desire for training research and project oriented applied biologists and biology educators (educationalist) that are having a powerful analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. This necessitated among others upgrading the knowledge and skills of biologists trained at a B.Sc. and B.Ed. levels to M.Sc. and M.Ed. levels to meet the demands of trained manpower in development and production sectors of the country.

To this end, post-graduate programs mainly focusing on demanded areas of Biology, viz, Biotechnology, Genetics, Microbiology, Parasitology, Entomology, Botanical Science, Plant Physiology and Ecology, Animal Physiology and Ecology, Fisheries and Aquatic Science and Biological Science Education are designed in the department to meet the country’s increasing need for highly skilled and competent biologist and biology educator that can work in education, research and health institutions and as well as in various industries. In addition, these new programs are intended to provide better and ample job opportunities for post-graduate students in industries, research organizations, health and educational institutions.

Objectives:

  • To meet the growing demands of specialization in research, industry, health and education.
  • To give due coverage to emerging areas of Biology such as Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering etc.
  • To link postgraduate education with fieldwork and productivity by laying special emphasis to the needs of the local conditions, the environment and the requirements of society.
  • To help increase productivity and provide employment opportunities including self-employment and entrepreneurship.
  • To produce qualified and skilled professionals capable of teaching in high schools and colleges.
  • To upgrade the qualifications of teachers with Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) equipping them with specialized professional skills.
  • To give the due recognition and opportunity to teachers and develop a career structure for devoted and committed teachers with the aim of soliciting their continued service to society as teachers.
  • To produce science biology teachers who can implement the studentcentered strategy of the teaching-learning process and contribute their share towards solving the problem of science teaching and education in Ethiopia.
