ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW 

Haramaya University, Department of Environmental Health science was established in 1997 under the faculty of health sciences. The major aim of establishing the department was to address the health man power need of the country with the major focus of strengthening the public health services through what then was called the health center team. The team consisted of environmental health professionals, health officers, public health nurses and medical laboratory technicians. Like the other team members with the exception of health officers the training modality was at diploma level.

Based on the existed and anticipated environmental health related problems in the country, the Environmental health professional training, later in 2004, upgraded to a bachelor degree level and the department of environmental health has trained and awarded more than 500 environmental health professionals who fill the different gaps of health sector in the country. In addition, the department has launched a summer-in service bachelor degree level program in environmental health and the department has trained and awarded more than 500 environmental health professionals who again fill the gaps.

The department has been running a three years curriculum for BSc degree in environmental health but recently after the national curriculum harmonization among government universities, organized by Ethiopian Ministry of Education, the duration is extended to be four years.

In response to the pressing societal need, international and national guidelines and its internal dynamist’s the department has launched a postgraduate training program on Master of Science in water supply and sanitation management in 2013. So far the department has trained and warded 10 water supply and sanitation management professionals.

The decentralized government structure of the country and expansion of higher teaching institutions require competent professionals. Thus, increasing need of evidence-based decision making has also necessitates training of high level professionals. Considering this, one can say the university/department has made immense contribution to the training of middle and high level environmental health professionals and betterment of health service in Ethiopia. Environmental health department has been one of the active departments involved in education, research and community service. Continuing its endeavor to meet the developmental needs of Ethiopia by producing a critical mass of skilled professionals, the department is on its way to launch a PhD and MSC program in Environmental and Public Health by September/October 2017.

ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The College of Health and Medical Sciences is among those colleges which were opened at expanding time of the university and Department of Environmental Health Science is one of the pioneer departments in this college. Over the years, we have built a strong reputation in producing qualified environmental health professionals and undertaking problem solving researches. Our approach to learning and research make our programs an excellent gateway into the field of Environmental as well as Public Health.

We are committed to the education and training of Environmental health professionals. Our academic programs prepare Environmental health researchers and practitioners for the constantly evolving and emerging Environmental health challenges. We are contributing qualified professionals for “prevention lead health policy” of the country. So far we are producing competent professionals on undergraduate (BSc. in Environmental Health Science) and post graduate (MSc. in Water Supply and Sanitation Management) programs. On September/October 2017, we are striving to launch post graduate programs at PhD and MPH level in Environmental and Public Health.

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences has a good experience of professional practice, training and research. We have a functional laboratory unit with a capacity of performing significant Environmental tests, and still we are striving to improve its capacity which we expect to have a well-functioning modern laboratory unit in new building by April 2017. In addition, we are trying to create link with the nearby laboratory facilities. We also have a functional workshop, which is expected to be well furnished in new building by May, 2017. Eventually the department has shifted the focus of teaching-learning to practical skill developments.

Staffs of the department are highly motivated to participate in research undertakings in which some have won the HU research grant plenty of times, some applied and won on a national grant call. For the future the staffs have formed a research group in order to develop a proposal for different projects and compete on local, national and international grant calls. In addition, each graduating class students of the department are expected to carry out their research project independently with the assistance of their advisors.

Concerning community services, the department is exerting an effort to alleviate the problems of the surrounding community by using the available opportunities. In doing so, the department has developed project proposals, executed some of it (i.e. offered training, disseminated health information, demonstration, etc.) and still trying to alleviate the observed community Environmental health related problems. The department has initiated the formulation of Students’ Environmental club with a primary aim of alleviating the community’s problem. In addition, the department is closely working with the University’s hospital in infection prevention and Environmental quality aspects. The department has also taken a big role (focal person) in mobilizing professionals in eastern Ethiopia in strengthening Ethiopian Environmental Health Professionals Association.
