 1.      HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SCHOOL OF PLANT SCIENCES

The School of plant science is the pioneer department that has laid the foundation of teaching and research in crop science at the university. It was established in then College of Agriculture and mechanical arts in 1959. In the wake of its establishment, it began training for BSc degrees. Currently the school comprises four programs, namely Agronomy & Crop Ecology, Crop protection, Horticulture and Genetics & Plant Breeding.  The School launched the 1st M.Sc. program in the fields of Agronomy, Horticulture and Crop Protection in1979.

As a result of the success it achieved over the years in teaching and research, the School further launched PhD programs in Agronomy, Plant Pathology and Plant Breeding in the year 2001/2002 and expanded to many other M.Sc. and PhD programs is among the early efforts of the School in trying to meet the postgraduate level trained manpower needs of the nation.

Besides of teaching both undergraduate and post-graduate (M.Sc. and PhD) courses, the academic staff of the School is successfully running large number of research and extension projects funded by various national and international agencies and  serving communities.

To be a center of excellence in teaching, research and community service in crop production and managements through efficient utilization of available resources.

1.2  Mission

To produce highly qualified plant scientists through quality theoretical and practical teaching, who will envious work to tackle the poverty of rural population in particular and the nation at large, and to develop and disseminate problem solving crop production technologies through conducting demand- driven research.

There are several research programs run under the school of plant sciences. Amongst which the followings are the major once.

2.      ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

5.1. Admission Requirements

Successful candidates as per the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Education and the hosting university can be admitted.

5.2. Duration of Study

  • 3 years for regular undergraduate program.
  • 4 years for extension undergraduate program.
  • 5 years for summer undergraduate program.

5.3. Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum ECTS for graduation is a total of 180
  • 2.0 or higher cumulative grade point average (CGPA) overall courses and No “F” grade in any course (s) taken.

 5.4. Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction for the school is ENGLISH.

2. DEGREE NOMENCLATURE

The undergraduate Plant Science major program leads to a certification referred in English as: Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Sciences, In Amharic: የባችለርሳይንስዲግሪእፅዋትሳይንስ.

Assessment is carried out both as a continuous process during course delivery, which constitutes 60% weight of the total mark and final exam, which constitutes 40%.  The assessment methods involved are summarized as follow:

 Grading System

Grading is carried out by FIXED SCALE GRADING SYSTEM based on the legislation of the hosting university.

5.FACILITIES/RESOURCES AT THE SCHOOL( posted on the link of facility)

The School is well equipped in terms of academic personnel and physical facilities to give quality education to the students. As indicated elsewhere (Section 3.1.6), the School has over 36 full-time senior academic staff members with ranks of Lecturer and above that are currently on duty and a number of others studying for their MSc and PhD degrees in-country and abroad. Moreover, the School has well equipped laboratories for practical sessions in all the disciplines of plant sciences such as agronomy, horticulture, plant pathology, entomology. Besides these existing laboratories, laboratory facilities will soon be available for practical sessions in tissue culture and biotechnology and seed science and technology. In campus and out campus field research stations of the School is also available for conducting field practical sessions. The School also arranges practical sessions/attachment at other institutes in the country National Soil Testing Laboratory, Institute of Biodiversity and Conservation or any other agricultural research laboratories when the need arises.

5.7  Existing Physical Resources and Infrastructure

6.1.1. Internet Access

The University is networked with broadband internet connection and it has its own web site.

6.1.2. Laboratories

The School has four laboratories in plant protection (entomology, pathology), agronomy and Breeding and Genetics, seed science & technology, and horticulture and plant physiology.

6.1.3. Classrooms and Offices

The school has several class rooms which shares with other Schools in the College. Moreover, the School has got four class rooms for its MSc and PhD programs.

6.1.4. Library and Literature

The Schools shares libraries and literatures with other schools/departments in the College of   Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in particular and to other University programs in general.

6.6   HORTICULTURE PROGRAM

 6.6.1 Overview of Horticulture Program

Horticulture is the science, art and industry of plant cultivation that is engaged with fruits, berries and nuts, vegetables, herbs, spices, stimulants, medicinal plants as well as ornamentals such as flowers, trees and shrubs.It is unique as a scientific field of study in that it often utilizes artistic expression to aid the design of human landscapes and to restore natural environments. At its core, it is an environmental science that recognizes humans are dependent on their environment for sustenance and wellbeing. In general, horticulture has a key role to play, in the global challenge to provide a growing world population with nutritious food, produced in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way and moreover produces the whole spectrum of ornamental plants. To this end, the Horticulture Program, under the School of Plant Sciences is running graduate programs in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy since 1978/80. It thrives based on the three strategic pillars ‘excellence in teaching; research and community engagement of  the university by delivering applied and basic horticultural topics related with plant-soil interactions, plant physiology, landscape designing, floriculture, pre and post-harvest handling, crops improvement and horticultural crops seed production and propagation; conducting research in various aspects of horticultural crops and outreach technologies for sustainable development of horticulture sector.

6.6.2  Mission, Vision and Value of the Horticulture Program

7.1.2.1 Mission of Horticulture Program

To produce qualified, competent, problem solving and creative graduates in the fields of horticulture disciplines, undertake problem solving researches, generate and share knowledge and technologies, and provide demand-driven and transformative community service.

7.1.2.2. Vision

The program has a vision of becoming one of the ‘center of excellence in advanced horticulture both in rural and urban community’ in Africa and the best in the country that can significantly contribute in sustainable development of the sector and poverty reduction program through generating qualified graduates and technologies that can boost the production, productivity and marketing of horticultural crops; advocate for practical and science-based environmental stewardship, enhance the quality of life as well as in contributing new scientific knowledge and theories to the world scientific community.
